Lamar Opera Workshop and Opera Theatre proudly provide a multitude of enriching performance experiences for both graduate and undergraduate students with operatic potential. Our goal is to teach our students the skills necessary to perform on the operatic stage with confidence and to prepare them for further study in the field of vocal performance. Our students have the opportunity to work with artist teachers and dedicated educators who bring a wealth of professional experience into the academic setting.

In addition, Lamar Opera Theatre has the mission of becoming accessible to all segments of the greater community in Beaumont by promoting and increasing public knowledge and appreciation of opera.

Auditions

The Opera Workshop and Opera Theatre are open to graduate and undergraduate students with their studio instructor’s permission. The students will also have to audition for the class or for each production in order to obtain the consent of the opera director. Current and prospective students should contact Dr. Serdar Ilban for further information on the audition process and placement in the ensemble.

The Opera Workshop is a multifaceted ensemble course for singers with emphasis in lyric diction, acting, movement, and dramatic coaching. Appropriate role or partial role assignments will be made based on the student’s audition, rehearsal participation and preparedness and future operatic potential.

Although the focus is on training, public performances are considered an important component of the training plan. The Opera Workshop presents two productions annually with one production in the fall and the second in the spring. All roles performed within Lamar Opera Theatre productions are double cast whenever possible. All productions are performed in the original language with projected super titles.
