Teaching and Research

Richard Gachot has a diverse background in the arts. He studied film at Denison University, interned at the Kitchen in New York City and was assistant to painter Hap Tivey. After graduating with a Masters in Architecture from Columbia University, he worked for over 15 years with numerous architecture and interior design firms in the U.S. and France. From 2005-2014 he was director of the Interior Design Program at Lamar University.

His publications include a monograph on a Russian émigré architect, Nicholas B. Vassilieve: from Art Nouveau to Modernism, (read the Cardinal Cadence article Bringing History Home) and an upcoming critical re-edition of W.K. Oltar-Jevsky’s Contemporary Babylon to be published by Kolo Editions in St. Petersburg, Russia. Recent research includes a report and annotated drawing archive on Donald Judd’s unbuilt concrete building project, for the Chinati and Judd Foundations in Marfa, Texas, and a National Register nomination for Lamar University’s Plummer Administration Building.

At Lamar University, Richard Gachot has taught both Studio and Art History courses including Drawing I & II, Visual Design, Art Appreciation, History of Renaissance Art, History of Modern Architecture and Sculpture. He has led three study abroad courses to Paris, France, and one design study tour to New York City.
