One of the most controversial plays of the 19th, A Doll’s House depicts a young housewife desperate to escape her dependency on her husband. In order to save him from debt, she commits an unthinkable act; the revelation of that act leads to the unraveling of relationships and a climax that shocked audiences when the play was first produced. The themes of marriage, feminism, friendship, and family that reverberate in the wake of that climax are still pertinent today.

A young black man, Jefferson, is condemned to death in 1948 Louisiana. At the trial his lawyer, trying to save his life, called him no more a human being than a hog. In prison, Jefferson acts like one, insisting that he will be dragged like that hog to his death in the electric chair. His godmother asks a schoolteacher to teach him to die with dignity. That teacher confronts the condemned man and his own identity as a black man as execution day arrives.

The Tempest

This is the first offering in a new Lamar University Artistic Series, Bard on the Bayou. Widely recognized as Shakespeare's farewell to the stage, The Tempest depicts the adventures of the powerful magician Prospero, banished by his brothers from Italy to live on an island with his daughter, Miranda; his servant monster, Caliban; and his helpful spirit Ariel. When a ship carrying Italian royalty, including his brothers, crashes on the island, the complications ensue. This fantastical adaptation for young audiences is suitable for ages 10 and up.

Spring Dance Concert

Choreographers present a variety of dance works, with choreographic styles ranging from ballet, jazz, modern, tap, musical theatre, improvisation and hip-hop, and performed primarily by Lamar students. 

Beaumont's Babe: A Sportrait of Babe Didrikson Zaharias

Born in Port Arthur, raised in Beaumont, Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias is considered to be one of the greatest female athletes of the 20th century. A basketball champion who achieved Olympic gold in track and field, Babe also won multiple golf championships and blazed the trail for women in sports. This original work, created by the students of Lamar, will draw upon her life and words to celebrate the centennial of this southeast Texan through scenes, songs, dance and athletic activity.
