Mission and Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at Lamar University. The programs in our department have an excellent reputation in academic and research foundations as well as clinical training.
Our undergraduate curriculum provides students with a complete overview of human communication and its disorders within the context of a broad liberal arts education. Students receive cutting-edge information about the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. The curriculum includes the opportunity to observe therapy as well as participate in our LU Junior Clinician Program and LU SPHS Undergraduate Research Program. We have active chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA), which has received the Silver Chapter Recognition for outreach to the community, educational opportunities, and social and fundraising activities.
Our graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology are accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Our Speech-Language Pathology program is committed to preparing competent and compassionate clinicians, motivated scholars, and ethical professionals for entry into the field of speech-language pathology. Our curriculum covers the full range of normal and disordered human communication in children and adults. Coursework is supplemented by clinical experiences both on and off campus.
Students in our professional Doctor of Audiology program receive academic instruction in the scientific foundation of sound, auditory processes and behaviors and in the evaluation, diagnosis and non-medical treatment of hearing disorders. Students complete their clinical training in a variety of settings that include medical centers, public schools, special education facilities and clinics across the United States.
Students in both programs benefit from individualized experiences and mentoring from outstanding faculty recognized as experts in their fields. The faculty is committed to excellence in teaching and research, as well as getting to know you on an individual basis.
Our department houses the LU Speech and Hearing Clinic. Please check our links for more information about the state of the art clinical training in audiology and speech language pathology.
