Music department presents staged reading about the life of Johannes Brahms Oct. 21-22
The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music will host a staged reading of “My Music, My Love,” a one-act play written by Ellen Walker Rienstra in collaboration with Eduard Schmieder, Oct. 21-22, 2016. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students/faculty/staff (with ID). Read more.
Itzhak Perlman shares advice, adventures during student session
Students listen to Itzhak PerlmanItzhak Perlman, internationally celebrated concert violinist, soloist, teacher and conductor, spoke to an attentive standing-room-only audience of music students in the Rothwell Recital Hall on Thursday, Oct. 6. Later that evening, Perlman would speak before a much larger public audience as the 12th in the Judge Joe J. Fisher Distinguished Lecture Series.
Perlman is known for his ability to evoke emotion and lyricism from his violin, making deep connections with his audiences. Since he first asked his parents for a violin at age three, he has become one of the most well-known and respected instrumentalists in the world. Read more.
Cardinal Jazz Orchestra fall concert Oct. 13
Lamar University's Cardinal Jazz Orchestra will perform its fall concert on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at 7:30 p.m., in the Rothwell Recital Hall. The program will feature fresh big band versions of such standards as Cole Porter’s Love for Sale and Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge over Troubled Water. The orchestra will also perform original material by some of America’s most well known composers of contemporary big band music, including Gordon Goodwin, Bob Florence and Patrick Williams. Admission is free.
The ensemble, under the direction of Associate Professor Rick Condit, has performed regularly throughout the region and has recently hosted several guest artists, including the United States Air Force Airmen of Note, the Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra and trumpet legend Allen Vizzutti. Read more.
Marching Band performs at Houston Texans football game halftime
The Showcase of Southeast Texas Marching Band was honored to be invited to perform at the Houston Texans NFL halftime show on Sept. 18, 2016. You can view the performance and additional footage from the exciting day on our Facebook page.
New Diane Baker scholarship established
Lamar University has announced a new scholarship, the Diane Baker Scholarship in Music, for students pursuing music education in the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music. The scholarship was established in February 2016 with gifts from Baker’s many friends and colleagues.
Recipients must be full-time music education majors of any class level, and to remain on the scholarship, they must maintain a GPA of 3.0. Read more.
