Lamar University Marching Band Homecoming Band Competition

About the Event

For bands that choose to participate with us, there are two parts to the day: a competition parade and a combined half-time performance. The parade start time is 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. Bands will need to be in place by 12:15 p.m. The Lamar vs. Nicholls State Homecoming football game will kick off at 6 p.m. The combined mass band half-time show will happen at approximately 7:20 p.m.

This year’s LU Homecoming theme is “Cardinal Strong: Past, Present, and Future.” However, for the parade competition, your band is not limited to this theme. You may play any musical selection of your choice. Competing bands will be allowed to stop in front of the review grandstand and perform a 60-second routine to the judges. We will provide you with the music that will be played for the half-time show.

After the parade all bands will participate in a combined rehearsal for the half-time performance with the LU Marching Band. This will take place from 3 - 4 p.m. in Provost Umphrey Stadium. Boxed dinners will be provided to all participants compliments of Lamar University. At 4 p.m., bands will be seated in the stadium bleachers for the awards ceremony.

Awards will be given for:

  • Best Band in Class
  • Best Band Overall
  • Best Overall Drumline
  • Best Overall Auxiliary Unit
  • Best Overall Drum Major
  • Best Overall Marching Skills
  • Best Overall Music Performance
  • Best Drumline, Auxiliary, Drum Major, Marching Skills, and Music Performance in each class

The LU band will perform pre-game at around 5:40 p.m. Kick-off is 6 p.m. During the second quarter, all participating bands will move down to the line-up zone behind the stadium’s east side. Half-time will begin around 7:20 p.m. All band students, directors, bus drivers, and official chaperones will receive free admittance to the Lamar vs Nicholls State Homecoming Game. Parents and all other supporters need to purchase a ticket to the game. (Tickets may be purchased at lamarcardinals.com.) Participating bands will sit in the stands until half-time. After the massed band performance, bands are dismissed upon each director’s time schedule. (Meaning, you can stay or head home.)

All participating students will receive a commemorative patch.
