Amber Marchut was born in Philadelphia and raised in New Jersey. She attended high school at Model Secondary School for the Deaf, a residential school for the deaf in Washington, D.C.

After completing her master's degree at Rochester Institute of Technology, she worked at the New Mexico School for the Deaf as well as the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, where she taught science and math. Realizing the nationwide issues regarding deaf education, she decided to return to school and work towards a doctorate degree in deaf education with a focus on critical theory and science education.
