Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Deaf Studies & Deaf Education is to prepare future professionals to work with individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing and those who are affiliated with the deaf community. We do this by using an ASL/English bilingual philosophy with an emphasis on competency, culturally responsiveness, empowerment, and knowledge production.  These goals are accomplished through research, instruction, community involvement, and collaboration in the fields of ASL teaching, interpreting, Deaf education, and Deaf studies.
