Faculty and students present at pop culture conference
Seven Lamar University Department of Communication and Media faculty and students recently presented papers and served as panelists at the annual Pop Culture Association of the South/American Culture Association of the South (PCAS/ACAS), held in New Orleans on October 4-6. The conference covers popular culture ranging from films to clothing and art. Read More
Communication Students Win Big at Press Club
The Press Club of Southeast Texas hosted its annual Excellence in the Media/Newsmaker of the Year Awards ceremony June 8. Faculty, staff and students from Lamar University took home a total of 43 awards for their hard work this past year. Through corporate underwriting and donations from this event, the club raises funds for the Press Club Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a Lamar University communications student every spring. University Press Staff Earn 45 Awards, Best in Show Honors
he University Press staff earned 45 awards in competition of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association for work published during 2017. The UP was awarded Overall Excellence among non-daily newspapers and UPbeat, the publication’s magazine, was awarded Overall Excellence magazine. The UP, the student newspaper of Lamar University, also earned Best-in-Show honors. Read More

Communication students present at LU Research Expo
The Undergraduate Research Exposition is a prestigious event that allows Lamar University students, under the guidance of a faculty mentor, the opportunity to implement and showcase their research projects. On Friday, April 21, 2017, four Department of Communication students showcased their research at the Expo: Rachel Curtis, Stephanie DeMeyer, Daniel Pemberton, and Alexandra Sokolova. (Their faculty mentors were Dr. Rui, Prof. O. Stanley, and Dr. Tindall.)
Small Group Comm and Conflict Management class raised funds for St. Jude's
Congratulations to Dr. Rui's small group communication and conflict management class! The students conducted a fundraising project for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Houston. The project lasted the entire spring semester, including a field day event on April 19, 2017. The entire campaign raised $6,651.3 for St. Jude.
Stanley selected at nominee for Regents' Teacher Award
Ms. Ruth Stanley is Lamar University's nominee for the TSUS Regents' Teacher Award. The Board of Regents of the Texas State University System annually recognizes one exceptional teacher from a TSUS member institution with the Regents' Teacher Award. Regents' Teachers are selected by the chancellor based on their outstanding performance as educators, contributions to the development of courses, and use of innovative teaching methods, among other criteria. This is the second time in three years that Ruth has been chosen to represent the university for this award.
Faculty members receive summer research grants
Dr. Raymond Rui and Mr. Mahmoud Salimi have been awarded summer research grants by the Lamar University Research Office. These grants are peer reviewed and will help these two professors pursue important research in their respective fields. Dr. Rui will work on a research project about how people assess the credibility of online information based on their expectation. The project seeks to examine the psychological mechanism by which people evaluate online information. Results of this project have the potential to raise people’s awareness of their personal bias in processing online information and be translated into education aimed at improving people’s digital literacy.
Mr. Salimi’s project is a short fiction film about coexistence and tolerance that emphasizes on the culture of dialog and understanding. The film is in postproduction stage, and the grant will be used to complete the film.
South Africa study abroad featured on LUTV on Fox special
This summer seven students from the Department of Communication participated in the first Lamar University Study Abroad South Africa program. The students spent four weeks in Johannesburg during July 2016, and used skills they acquired at LU to produce stories about South Africa. In October 2016, LUTV on Fox aired a half-hour news segment featuring their stories.
