Ms. Young is a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Kansas, and has both a master’s degree in art history and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Graphic Design from the University of Alabama. Before coming to Lamar, she was the Mellon Foundation/Loo Family curatorial intern in European and American painting, sculpture and decorative arts at the University of Kansas' Spencer Museum of Art. Her dissertation, After the Deluge: Contemporary Artists Engage Katrina, examines instances of contemporary art that investigates the ramifications of this catastrophic event in various ways. Ms. Young is particularly interested in the way visual interpretations of trauma can create or recreate collective or cultural identity in the wake of catastrophe.
As director of the Dishman Art Museum, Ms. Young has curated more than a dozen exhibitions and supervises several student interns. She has been the invited regional and national juror for outside institutions and galleries. Currently she serves on the South Eastern Texas Arts Council board and as chair of the Student and Emerging Professionals committee of the College Art Association.
Although her focus is primarily on contemporary art, Ms. Young teaches a variety of art history courses at Lamar. Courses include Survey of Art I, Art Since 1940, Cultural Hybridity and Transnationalism in Contemporary Art, Modernisms: The Art of Paris at the End of the 19th Century, the Business of Art and Advanced Survey in Contemporary Art.
